Backyard Landscaping in Glenhaven

A steep, rocky backyard transformed into a more practical family garden with a stone-clad retaining wall, black fencing, irrigation and fresh turf.

Stone-clad retaining wall and black vertical fence beside a modern Glenhaven home

This Glenhaven backyard had limited usable space because of its steep slope and extensive sandstone. DGP Landscaping excavated and reshaped the site, built a new retaining wall and created a level lawn area for the family to enjoy.

The finished garden combines natural stone cladding, black vertical fencing and new turf. It provides more usable outdoor space while fitting the modern home and surrounding bushland.

From Rocky Slope to Finished Garden

The original backyard was heavily sloped, with large areas of sandstone and little flat ground for the client and his children to use. Significant excavation and rock removal were needed before the new garden levels could be formed.

Scope of Work

  • Excavation and removal of sandstone to reshape the backyard
  • Construction of a block retaining wall to support the new levels
  • Irregular natural stone cladding on the main retaining wall
  • Rendered wall sections elsewhere around the property
  • Installation of black vertical fencing above the wall
  • Irrigation beneath the new lawn
  • Ground preparation and installation of fresh turf

Project Details

Location: Glenhaven, Sydney
Services: Retaining Walls & Landscaping

Materials:  Blockwork, natural stone cladding, black vertical fencing and turf
Outcome:  A larger, more usable lawn and a finished garden suited to the sloping site

Build Process

The team began by excavating the slope and breaking out sandstone to create space for the new layout. Once the levels were established, a block retaining wall was built to retain the ground and increase the usable area of the backyard.

The main wall was finished with irregular natural stone cladding. Black vertical fencing was installed above it, while other wall sections around the property received a rendered finish. The team then prepared the ground, installed irrigation and laid fresh turf to complete the lawn.

Challenges

The steep gradient and amount of sandstone made excavation the main challenge. The ground had to be reshaped before the retaining wall and level lawn area could be built.

Result

The completed backyard now offers substantially more usable lawn space for the family. The stone-clad wall provides a strong visual feature, while the black fencing gives the garden a clean finish that works with the modern house and natural bushland setting.
