Replacement of a failing timber retaining wall with concrete sleepers, Colorbond fencing, a new gate and low-maintenance side access.

This Bella Vista project involved replacing a deteriorating timber retaining wall within a narrow side access area. The existing wall was beginning to fail, while the surrounding ground was difficult to use and maintain.
DGP Landscaping removed the old structure and installed a new concrete sleeper retaining wall with steel posts. Colorbond fencing and a matching access gate were added above the wall, with decorative gravel and concrete stepping stones completing the pathway.
The existing timber retaining wall had deteriorated and was no longer providing a reliable boundary between the properties. The narrow space between the house and boundary also contained uneven ground, vegetation and existing services, making access and maintenance difficult. Replacing the wall required careful demolition and material handling within the restricted work area.

Location: Bela Vista, Sydney
Services: Retaining Walls & Landscaping
Materials: Concrete sleepers, steel posts, Colorbond cing, decorative gravel and concrete stepping stones
Outcome: A stable new retaining system with a secure boundary and cleaner, low-maintenance side access
The project began with the careful demolition and removal of the deteriorated timber wall. Once the existing structure and surrounding material had been cleared, the area was excavated and prepared for the new retaining system.
Steel posts and concrete sleepers were installed to create a durable retaining wall along the boundary. Colorbond fencing was then fitted above the wall, with a matching gate providing secure access to the side of the property.
The access area was finished with decorative gravel to create a clean, practical surface. Concrete stepping stones were added to provide a defined route through the space while keeping ongoing maintenance low.

The main challenge was the restricted space between the house and boundary. Demolition, excavation and installation had to be completed around the building, air-conditioning units and other existing services without affecting the surrounding structures.
Careful planning and staged material handling allowed the retaining wall, fencing and access finishes to be installed within the narrow work area.
The failing timber wall has been replaced with a durable concrete sleeper retaining wall that provides long-term stability and a clean boundary line.
The new Colorbond fence and gate improve privacy and security, while the gravel and stepping-stone path make the side access more practical and considerably easier to maintain. The completed area now feels structured, secure and finished.
